Permaculture Plan for the Garden

With help and guidance from Permaculture designer Cat Middle we set about producing a plan for the Community Garden based on permaculture principles. Now all we have to do is transfer it from paper into the garden. With thanks to Cat and Sophia Elek from HogCo for organising and funding the sessions.

Filming in the garden - October 09

Filming in the garden - October 09

Garden Film!

Yes the movies are coming to the community garden!

At the weekend some of the community gardeners, put down their forks and shovels and picked up cameras and boom mikes. Thanks to the expert tutelage of local artist and film maker Volkhardt Müller, the gardeners learnt the basic film skills that will help them make a short 5 minute documentary, which will be shown at the ‘View From Here’ Film Festival, in December (watch this space for dates).

It was an amazing 2 day experience and we learnt a lot and not just about film making, but thanks to some inciteful discussions we also learnt more about our own attiudes and ideas for the garden.

Details of how the film is progressing and when the film will be shown will follow shortly.

Event Update: Dig For Newton

Saturday’s Dig For Newton event was a great day out with much achieved.

Many of the brambles that have choked the garden for so long, finally gave up their fight, yielding a large section of the garden full of rich loamy soil which now has been sewn with clover to increase soil fertility and keep the weeds at bay during the winter months.

Romance must have also been in the air as during the day volunteers dug a new pond, and after many hours the muddy pit had transformed into the shape of a heart!

The delicious barbecue at the end of the day was the perfect end to a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Following the last Community Garden meeting – we have decided to combine an already planned open day with an attempt to begin several new projects. We just need muscle – so recalling the days of the land army, we have decided to name our next event ‘Dig For Newton’, which is a call to all interested persons to come down to the garden with or without a spade and help us dig to victory!

It will be a great day. There will be a number of different projects happening; including the construction of a wildlife pond, riverbank maintenance and the creation of a tree nursery. All we need is you!!

There will also be plenty of activities for both adults and children, including a free barbecue for every hungry volunteer. We will publicize these activities as and when we confirm them – so do watch this space for more detail.

We hope you can make it down for the day – any amount of time you can spare would be warmly welcomed and richly rewarded, so come along on September 26th any time between 10am and 5pm and help us Dig For Newton!

First Potato Harvest

First Potato Harvest

It doesn’t seem that long ago that the potatoes were going in, but Saturday saw several of us grabbing the forks to lift out a good crop of community spuds! If you want to find out what they taste like, you’ll have to come down to the Dig For Newton event on Saturday 26th September – where we will bake these beauties and smother them in butter!

Britain in bloom 2009

This week Judges for Newton Abbot’s Britain in Bloom competition were shown around by members of the community garden.

The weather wasn’t great, but we’re sure the warm smiles from various volunteers raised the judges spirits.

Watch this space to see how we got on in the competition.

Yesterday was an historic day for the community garden. Members of Transition Newton Abbott visited Town Hall chambers and signed the lease to Vicary’s Field. Afterwards volunteers marked the event in true Community Garden style by digging up brambles followed by a well earned barbecue!
